Simone Veil, a survivor of Nazi death camps and a European Parliament president who spearheaded abortion rights as one of France's most prominent female politicians, died Friday at 89, her family said. A funeral ceremony with military honors is to be held on Wednesday at Les Invalides, site of Napoleon's tomb, the presidential Elysee Palace said. In a measure of the nation's esteem for Veil, French flags will be dressed in black ribbons and European flags will fly at half-staff.

Congressman Asks FBI to Look into Fake Net Neutrality Comments

A Democratic Congressman from New Jersey has asked the Department of Justice and the FBI to look into whether fake comments submitted as part of the FCC’s net neutrality proceeding violated federal law. In a letter sent to Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe this week, Rep. Frank Pallone urged the pair to investigate reports that stolen identities were used to submit comments to the Commission.

Iranian city soars to record 129 degrees: Near hottest on Earth in modern measurements

A city in southwest Iran posted the country’s hottest temperature ever recorded Thursday afternoon, and may have tied the world record for the most extreme high temperature. Etienne Kapikian, a forecaster at French meteorological agency MeteoFrance, posted to Twitter that the city of Ahvaz soared to “53.7°C” (128.7 degrees Fahrenheit). Kapikian said the temperature is a “new absolute national record of reliable Iranian heat” and that it was the hottest temperature ever recorded in June over mainland Asia.
