A new study that analyzed nearly a half-million square miles in northwest Canada found that this permafrost decay is affecting 52,000 square miles of that vast stretch of earth—an expanse the size of Alabama.

Terminal cancer patients in complete remission after one gene therapy treatment

A groundbreaking gene therapy treatment which boosts a patient's own immune cells has been shown to clear disease from one third of terminal patients. US pharmaceutical company Kite Pharma released results from the first six months of its trial of the new treatment, called CAR-T cell therapy. Some 36 per cent of the 101 patients on the trial were still in complete remission at six months, and eight in 10 saw their cancer shrink by at least half during the study.

New holster forces all nearby body cams to start recording when gun is pulled

Axon, the body cam division of Taser International, has announced Signal Sidearm, a gun holster sensor that detects when a weapon has been removed from a holster and automatically prompts all nearby body cams to start recording. The Signal Sidearm, despite its slightly confusing name and provided artwork, isn't a pricey, complex smart weapon, but rather a sensor that can be retrofitted into "most existing firearm holsters." The sensor is powered by a coin cell battery that lasts approximately 1.5 years. It sounds like the sensor is technologically very simple, which hopefully means it's also very reliable.

According to the report, North Korea executed five senior officials using anti-aircraft guns because they made false reports that “enraged” leader Kim Jong-un, South Korea’s spy agency said Monday. The comments by the National Intelligence Service in a private briefing to lawmakers come as Malaysia investigates the poisoning death of Kim’s estranged elder half-brother, Kim Jong-nam.

Woman sent back to Singapore despite 27-year marriage

A woman married to a British man for 27 years has been sent back to Singapore. Irene Clennell told the BBC she has been removed without warning. She had been living near Durham with her husband, and has two British sons, as well as a granddaughter, in the UK. Periods spent abroad caring for her parents are thought to have invalidated her residential status. It is understood Mrs Clennell has spent most of her life in Singapore. The Home Office said it expected all those without leave to remain to exit the country once their visa expires.
